Car problems owners report, before a recall

BrakeNews reads the 1.6 million complaints owners have filed with NHTSA, groups them into specific problems, and flags vehicles where a problem shows up far more often than it does on other vehicles or than it used to. In past data, most problems that were later recalled were flagged this way first, typically more than a year ahead.

How the reports are made

  1. Complaint narratives are grouped into problems by their meaning, not NHTSA's broad component codes.
  2. Each vehicle and problem is scored: how much more often its complaints are about the problem than other vehicles' are, whether it is rising against the vehicle's own history, and a model's estimate that a recall follows within 24 months.
  3. An AI checks that the recent complaints behind a flag are really about that problem on that vehicle.
  4. An AI investigator reads the complaints and recalls and writes the report; a second AI checks every claim against the cited complaints. Only reports it approves are published. No person reviews them.

A report describes what owners report. It is not a finding that a defect exists, and a high score does not mean a recall will happen.
