What owners report

There are 50 complaints filed from March 2025 to October 2026, and they rise from 1 to 7 a month. About 43 of them describe the same failure. When the van stops at a light, stop sign or drive-thru, Auto Idle Stop shuts the engine off as designed. When the driver releases the brake, the engine does not restart. Often the van shifts itself into Park, and the driver has to restart it by hand. That can take several attempts or up to one or two minutes while the van sits in a travel lane or intersection. No crashes, fires, injuries or tows are reported. Several owners describe near rear-end collisions or other drivers swerving around them. Dealers often could not reproduce the problem. Replacing the battery did not fix it for several owners. Some vans had the starter replaced, and in three of them the problem came back or the starter was replaced again. Several owners say dealers called it a known Odyssey issue, and one owner was told a service bulletin had been issued and then withdrawn. The same theme is surging on the 2025 Odyssey (260 complaints, PRR 28.5) and the 2026 Odyssey (27 complaints, PRR 20.1). The 2024 model's own PRR is 19.3, which points to a problem in the current-generation idle-stop restart system rather than a theme common to all vehicles. No existing recall covers it. The 2013–2023 Odyssey fuel pump recall 23V858000 does not include the 2024 model and describes a different failure.

How it fails

Auto Idle Stop shuts the engine off normally at a stop. When the driver lifts off the brake, the engine cranks weakly, sputters, or does not restart at all. Many owners say the transmission drops into Park and a 'Shift to Park' message or the red battery warning light appears. In at least one case the start button does not respond until it is held down for a hard shutdown. Restarting by hand takes from a few seconds to about two minutes. The failure is intermittent and comes back. Owners report it with good batteries, after battery replacement, and in some cases after starter replacement. Mileage is given in only two narratives, at about 21,000 and 22,000 miles. One owner says it happens most often with the air conditioning on. Disabling Auto Idle Stop prevents it.

Safety risk

The van becomes disabled with no warning in active lanes and intersections, including during left turns, on a bridge overpass (11739505) and on multi-lane roads. This creates a risk of rear-end and cross-traffic collisions, and some drivers have left the vehicle in traffic to check it. No crashes or injuries are reported, but several near-misses are described. The failure happens at a standstill, not at speed, so steering and braking at driving speed are not reported as affected.

Findings and the complaints behind them

  1. Many independent owners describe the same sequence: Auto Idle Stop shuts the engine off at a stop, and the engine fails to restart when the brake is released, leaving the van stopped in traffic until it is restarted by hand.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11651666, 11672380, 11677377, 11713657, 11723214, 11736381, 11744767, 11751881, 11762202, 11764011, 11766682, 11767967, 11768330, 11768614, 11769042, 11771847

  2. Many owners say the van shifts into Park on its own, shows a 'Shift to Park' message or the red battery light, or does not respond to the start button.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11677348, 11721225, 11733652, 11741942, 11750363, 11750375, 11758869, 11760885

  3. Near-collisions are described, with other drivers swerving or almost rear-ending the stalled van. Other owners describe being stranded with children aboard in busy intersections or heavy traffic.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11677348, 11690366, 11741214, 11722539, 11701303

  4. Vans have stalled in hazardous places, including a bridge overpass where the engine took about a minute to restart.

    NHTSA complaint number: 11739505

  5. Battery replacement or testing did not fix the problem.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11674049, 11724091, 11733652, 11749879, 11758238, 11689151, 11701303

  6. Starters were replaced under warranty in some vans. The failure came back afterward, or the starter had to be replaced a second time. In one case a dealer said a failed starter would explain the earlier idle-stop failures. One of these owners does not know whether Auto Idle Stop was active during the latest stall.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11759234, 11768697, 11754219, 11770635

  7. Dealers often could not reproduce the fault. Owners report being told it is a known Odyssey issue, that a bulletin had been issued and then withdrawn, or simply to turn off Auto Idle Stop.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11677348, 11674049, 11741214, 11736192, 11750363, 11770635, 11689151

  8. One drive-thru stall involved warning lights for emissions, adaptive cruise control and tire pressure monitoring. The failure continued after the battery was replaced.

FI-ECU software error causing engine stall or loss of power on the 2023–2025 Pilot and Acura Type S models. Honda has used a software remedy for stalling before. Whether it bears on the Odyssey's idle-stop restart failure is unknown.

Open questions

  • Is the root cause idle-stop control software, starter wear from frequent restarts, or battery and charging management? Some failures came back after starter replacement, and others came back after the battery was replaced or a loose ground was fixed.
  • Did Honda issue and then withdraw a service bulletin for this condition on the 2024 Odyssey, as one owner was told, and does the software change one owner says is on 2025 models apply to the 2024?
  • The same failure appears on 2025 and 2026 Odysseys, and the theme is also surging on the 2025 Acura MDX and 2025 Ridgeline. Do these vehicles share the same restart hardware or software?
  • At what mileage does the failure typically start? Only two narratives give mileage, at about 21,000 and 22,000 miles.
