What owners report
Nine of the 10 complaints clearly involve the plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe. The tenth
(11693027) does not name the powertrain. The complaints fall into two groups. Two were filed on 2025-10-13 about events on 2025-10-11. In one, the owner reports repeated, unwarned loss of power right after an over-the-air software update, with a check engine light, loss of brake and steering assist, and a prompt to shift into park and restart. In the other, the owner reports a single sudden loss of power and an abrupt stop, followed by a check engine light. That second complaint does not mention an update or any repeat events. It likely, but not certainly, comes from the same over-the-air event, and the link rests only on the date. Recall 25V710000 (2023-2025 Wrangler 4xe, a software error in an over-the-air update that may cause loss of drive power) appears to cover this October 2025 update event. It does not cover the main pattern behind the signal. That recall does not appear in this vehicle's own recall list, which may be because it is filed under the model name 'Wrangler 4xe'. The other eight complaints, filed from November 2025 to October 2026, describe a different and consistent problem. While driving in Electric mode, propulsion drops or stops responding to the accelerator. Several owners report the dash message 'Electric Mode Temporarily Unavailable'. The gasoline engine then starts after a noticeable delay, sometimes abruptly or at high revs. This happens even with a lot of battery charge left: owners cite 35%, 41%, 73%, 75% and 81%. Two complaints say the dealer reproduced the problem on the owner's vehicle and on a second 4xe, with no trouble codes stored and no repair found. One owner says the problem began after the software update done under battery fire recall 25V741000. No crashes, injuries, fires or tows are reported. However, several owners describe near-misses while merging, pulling into traffic or avoiding a vehicle. The same theme is also signalling on the 2023 (17 recent complaints) and 2024
(62) Wrangler, so the problem does not appear to be limited to one model year. The symptom is consistent, but the case is held back by the small number of complaints, no diagnosed root cause, and an open question: is this a defect, or intended power limiting added by a software update?
How it fails
While driving in Electric mode, the electric motor's output drops, which two owners describe as stepping down to about 50%, then 25%. The vehicle stops responding to the accelerator for a few seconds. Then 'Electric Mode Temporarily Unavailable' appears and the vehicle switches to hybrid operation with a delayed, abrupt start of the gas engine. Electric mode often does not come back until the vehicle is stopped. Owners report it at many battery charge levels, at city and highway speeds (30 to 60 mph reported), going up small hills, merging and pulling out from a stop. One owner reports it almost daily. No trouble codes are stored. A separate, earlier event on 2025-10-11 involved repeated full loss of power after an over-the-air update, with a check engine light and a prompt to shift into park and restart (one owner). A second owner reports a single loss of power and abrupt stop with a check engine light on the same day.
Safety risk
For several seconds the vehicle does not respond to the accelerator when the driver asks for power, for example when merging, crossing traffic, passing or avoiding a hazard. This raises the risk of a crash. Owners describe being stuck in oncoming traffic and having to swerve and accelerate around a car backing out of a driveway. No crashes or injuries have been reported. In the October 2025 over-the-air update event, one owner also reports losing brake and steering assist.
Findings and the complaints behind them
Electric propulsion drops or stops responding to the accelerator in Electric mode, and the vehicle then switches to hybrid with a delayed gas engine start, despite plenty of battery charge left (owners cite 35%, 41%, 73%, 75% and 81%).
NHTSA complaint numbers: 11747685, 11726552, 11765157, 11768376, 11770231
'Electric Mode Temporarily Unavailable' is displayed after a staged power reduction (two owners describe about 50%, then 25%) or a near-dead accelerator pedal.
NHTSA complaint numbers: 11747685, 11726552, 11765157
Hesitation or loss of power in Electric mode on highways and when pulling into traffic. One owner reports it gets worse once battery charge falls below 50%, another after about 8 miles of electric driving.
NHTSA complaint numbers: 11765180, 11765357, 11698376
Dealers reproduced the loss of electric propulsion on the owner's vehicle and on a second Wrangler 4xe on the lot. No trouble codes were stored, no repair was identified, and one vehicle was returned as 'operating as designed'. One owner says a warranty arbitrator found a propulsion nonconformity.
NHTSA complaint numbers: 11726552, 11747685
One owner says reduced electric propulsion and delayed engine engagement began after the battery recall 25V741000 software update. Before it, the owner says the same route, including uphill sections, could be driven entirely in Electric mode.
NHTSA complaint number: 11770231
One owner reports repeated, unwarned loss of power on 2025-10-11, right after an over-the-air software update, with a check engine light, loss of brake and steering assist, and a prompt to shift into park and restart. This matches the over-the-air software error recalled under 25V710000. A second owner reports a single sudden loss of power and abrupt stop on the same date, followed by a check engine light. That complaint does not mention an update, repeat events or the powertrain, so its link to the same event rests on the date alone.
NHTSA complaint numbers: 11693121, 11693027
Owners describe near-misses, including being stuck in oncoming traffic and having to swerve and accelerate to avoid a neighbor's car. No crashes, injuries, fires or tows are reported.

25V710000Covers this problem
2023-2025 Wrangler 4xe, a software error in an over-the-air update may cause loss of drive power. It covers only the October 2025 over-the-air event, clearly in 11693121 and probably in 11693027. It does not cover the eight later complaints about staged loss of electric power with a delayed engine start. One of those owners reports that their affected vehicle is not in this recall's population.

2020-2025 Wrangler 4xe high-voltage battery fire recall. It does not address loss of power. However, one owner links the start of reduced electric propulsion to this recall's software remedy.

Open questions
- Is the staged electric power cut and delayed engine start a fault, or power limiting intentionally added by the 25V741000 battery recall software or by the 25V710000 remedy?
- Does the 25V710000 population include all 2025 Wrangler 4xe vehicles showing the staged power loss, or only those that received the faulty over-the-air update in October 2025?
- Is the vehicle in complaint 11693027 a 4xe, and was its loss of power on 2025-10-11 caused by the same over-the-air update?
- Were complaints 11726552 and 11747685, which both describe a 50%/25% power step-down and dealer reproduction on a second 4xe, filed by the same owner?
- Is the same failure behind the much larger 2024 Wrangler signal (62 recent complaints), and does it affect 2023 models too?
- Did the vehicles in the October 2025 complaints receive the 25V710000 remedy, and did their symptoms stop afterwards?
