What owners report

Owners of the 2025 Honda Odyssey file far more complaints about the engine shutting off than owners of other vehicles do (PRR about 28.5). There are 260 complaints from July 2025 to October 2026. About 83% of them

(215) describe this problem on the owner's own vehicle, 29 are about something else and 16 are unclear. The monthly count is still rising: 43 in October 2026, up from 5 to 10 a month in late 2025. The complaints describe one specific failure, not a loose mix of stalls. The Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off as designed at a light or stop sign. When the driver releases the brake, the engine does not restart. The van often shifts itself into Park, and the driver has to cycle the ignition, sometimes several times, before moving again. The same account comes from many independent owners. Several owners say the dealer replaced the starter or the battery and the problem came back. Others say the dealer could not reproduce it. The 2024 and 2026 Odyssey are also flagged and rising (PRR 19.3 and 20.1), and the 2025 Acura MDX has a similar signal (PRR 29.0), which suggests a shared design. Several owners cite an NHTSA Engineering Analysis (EA25-004) on Honda/Acura idle-stop restart failures. One owner cites a Honda dealer communication dated May 21, 2025 about 2023-2025 Odysseys failing to restart after idle stop. Both are known here only from owner statements. No recall for the 2025 Odyssey covers this problem. One complaint form records two injuries, and none reports a crash.

How it fails

The engine does not restart after an Auto Idle Stop event. The engine shuts off normally at a stop. When the brake is released, it either fails to crank or dies, and the vehicle often drops into Park or Accessory mode. A brief warning may appear, such as a BRAKE or battery warning or 'Press Brake and Push Start'. Getting moving again means shifting to Park and pressing the start button, sometimes 2 to 5 times, and owners report delays of 10 seconds to several minutes. Several owners report slow, struggling or jerky restarts before the first full failure, and some say it is worse on hot days or after long drives. Reported onset ranges from about 10,000 to about 23,000 miles, and reports continue up to about 37,000 miles. Dealer starter or battery replacements have not stopped it from coming back in several cases. A few complaints describe stalls while moving or engine starting failures that have nothing to do with idle stop, but most events happen at a standstill.

Safety risk

The van can become unable to move in an active traffic lane or intersection, including on fast roads with 55 mph traffic and at night. That exposes occupants to rear-end and intersection crashes. Owners describe near rear-end collisions and other drivers going around the stalled van. One complaint form records 2 injuries, but its narrative does not describe how anyone was hurt. No crashes, fires or deaths are reported. Turning off Auto Idle Stop at every start avoids most events, but the setting turns back on with each new start and owners say they forget.

Findings and the complaints behind them

  1. Many independent owners describe the same sequence. Auto Idle Stop shuts the engine off at a stop, the engine fails to restart when the brake is released, and the driver must shift to Park and restart manually while stuck in traffic.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11773974, 11774033, 11773839, 11773494, 11772279, 11771322, 11770842, 11770872, 11764217, 11748850, 11770467

  2. The vehicle shifts itself into Park or Accessory mode, or shows a short-lived warning (BRAKE, battery, 'Press Brake and Push Start'), when the restart fails.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11772407, 11771974, 11771276, 11765064, 11772287, 11765418

  3. Dealer starter or battery replacements did not fix it. Owners report the problem coming back after one or two starter replacements, or after a new battery.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11773802, 11771543, 11768852, 11765418, 11752524, 11768695

  4. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. Some owners were told it is a known issue with no fix yet, or were charged for diagnosis once out of warranty.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11772279, 11772407, 11771290, 11771133, 11770872

  5. Reported onset ranges from about 10,000 miles to about 23,000 miles, and in one case it began before 36,000 miles. One owner reports continuing restart trouble at about 37,000 miles.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11772287, 11755565, 11771133, 11768695

  6. Owners link the failures to heat or long drives, and some report rough or slow restarts before the first full failure.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11772407, 11748850, 11765418, 11755565, 11762527

  7. Some owners report stalls while moving or general no-start problems. One reports stalls at about 40 mph with the transmission going into Park, after which the dealer replaced a failed starter. Another reports stalls during adaptive cruise control. That complaint's form records 2 injuries, but its narrative does not describe an injury event.

    NHTSA complaint numbers: 11761926, 11694397, 11748369, 11765418

  8. Two complaints filed in the same week have word-for-word identical narratives and may come from one owner, but this does not change the overall count much.

  • 25V031000Similar problem on another vehicle

FI-ECU software error causing stalls on the 2023-2025 Pilot and the Acura MDX and TLX Type S. It shows Honda has recalled stalls caused by software, but it does not cover the Odyssey.

Open questions

  • Is the root cause the starter, the battery or charging system, or the idle-stop control software? Repeat failures after starter replacement point away from the starter alone.
  • Does the NHTSA engineering analysis that owners cite (EA25-004) cover the 2025 Odyssey, along with the 2024 and 2026 Odyssey, the 2025 Acura MDX and the 2025 Ridgeline, which show similar rising signals?
  • Are the stall-while-moving and normal no-start reports the same fault or separate problems?
  • Does heat or a long drive reliably trigger the failure, as several owners suggest?
